Or,

A squall. These are comparatively micro-scale weather events that will not be forecast any more than the routine Caribbean forecast of isolated showers.

When you're chartering in the Caribbean, you're not likely to get caught in a hurricane—or even a named storm. These are tracked for days and are well-forecast. Your charter company will have called you back to base or directed you to a safe haven before one reaches you.

Squalls are much less well-forecast and much more common. You are bound to at least see one in the distance if not get caught up by one. They can be isolated to a small area covering just a few square miles and lasting just five, ten or fifteen minutes, though it might feel like longer!

If you’re observant, you can often tack or jibe away from an approaching isolated squall and miss it completely. Watch for vertical development and note whether the high tops (anvil-shaped) are directly above the base or inclined more to the left or right. If they're inclined right, the squall is going right (so sail to the left to avoid it) and vice versa. If it's getting taller and darker and lined-up straight then it's coming directly at you.
